Little Chinese Dragons (Little Chinese Windows)
Each of Louise's ‘Little Chinese Windows’ depicts a curated vignette of objects arranged as a still life image with image details layered over the top.
In this instance a stack of 1950’s 'American Chinatown restaurant’ style Chinese teacups bought from the USA sit in a traditional noodle bowl given to Louise by a friend in Hong Kong, SAR. A popular design used in the home, hawkers, and local eateries, the bowl is painted with a rooster, some plantain, and a flower. At the bottom sits an old vintage biscuit tin bearing the ‘double happiness’ symbol traditionally used for weddings and some golden dragons, symbolizing prosperity, health, and wisdom.
Overlayed are an embroidered Pheonix dragon is taken from an old silk robe Louise own, some embroidered flowers and feathered butterflies, and a little street shrine commonly found sitting outside shops and establishments all over Asia. In the background is part of a beautiful silk robe exquisitely embroidered dating from the 1950s.
