Neon Enlightenment Series - Wú Yòng Zhī Yòng
Wú Yòng Zhī Yòng (無用之用) translates to "the usefulness of uselessness". A tree that seems suitable for making furniture will be chopped down, yet a tree that is deemed unsuitable will be regarded as "useless" and survives. However, the tree may, in fact, have other purposes such as providing shade and benefiting the ecosystem. Hence, it may actually be more useful. This story hopes to inspire people to look at things we already know about from different perspectives, instead of making their own assumptions.
Neon signs are a significant part of Hong Kong's culture and visual identity. Their eye-catching and captivating aesthetic is often used for commercial purposes, for instance in the case of shop signs.
The artist uses glaring neon signs to communicate and call attention to the wisdom of Chinese sayings, idioms, and seals.
