The Birth Stand (Small)
"At the moment of fertilization, eggs emit lights."
Since early childhood, the designer had been fascinated by the enigmatic nature of life, and when he came across the above statement, his imagination was completely seized by this description of that almost magical moment when life is created. Pursuing his fascination led him to a research facility where he was able to witness the actual moment of fertilization. He described what he witnessed as ""beautifully grotesque"". He could not wait to share his interpretation of it with the world.
Thus, the Birth Stand was born. For the structure, light bulbs were added onto a spherical framework of wire rods. The bulbs were turned inwards so that the structure is suggestive of the process of fertilization and the light it emanates. Although the Birth Stand is a standing lamp, it send out a flickering light mimicking the beating of a heart and the "sparks" that fly when a sperm meets the egg.

The designer wanted to create a sense of intimacy with one of the most fundamental mysteries of life so that observers will be encouraged to re-think the value of life itself.
